Coach's Corner

Strategy, Movement, and Playing the Dinker

Basic Singles Strategy – When playing the dinker, it is of primary importance to be more patient then normal.

  1. On serve return play more balls up the middle of the court.  Return with medium pace shots.

  2. Get into a rally for a few shots before you attempt to try a more offensive shot.

  3. Keep your feet moving even if it seems like an eternity between shots.

  4. Be mentally prepared to play longer points.  You may be out there for a while.

  5. When coming to the net it is often best to hit the ball up the middle of the court since many dinkers are very good at finding angles from the corners of the court.

  6. Do not over hit the overhead.

  7. If you can volley short, most dinkers do not like coming forward to hit the ball.

  8. Always remember No. 4.
