The Forming of the USTA and the first National Championship

In 1880 a number of clubs had taken up the game of tennis. However the clubs played with different heights of nets and balls of varying weight and size.

This condition of affairs finally decided three clubs, one each in New York, Philadelphia, and Boston, to send out an invitation to such other clubs as they knew were playing the game, for a meeting in order to form a national association to bring order to this chaos. Thirty three clubs met in New York on May 21, 1881, and the United States Lawn Tennis Association was formed.

A date was set for the first championship, August 31, the place chosen for this being Newport, R, I., and, after some discussion, rules were adopted and a ball chosen for uniformity. The net height chosen was 4 feet at the net posts and 3 feet at the center—as compared to 3 feet in the center and 3 feet 6 inches at the net post that we use today.
